Facebook Account Email Hack: What You Need to Know and Do

This is a prevalent scenario that happens to Facebook users nearly every day. It could be a nefarious link that you clicked on at some point or even a phishing email you opened. Whatever the cause, a hacker somehow gained access to your Facebook password and started contacting all of your Facebook family and friends to get them to click on a malicious link as well.

You can reduce the risk of a Facebook hack with extra security features. None of these features are enabled by default, but when you turn them on, it becomes nearly impossible for anyone to hack into your Facebook account.

Having a hacked Facebook account is highly frustrating, and it can lead to misunderstandings. However, some hackers go further and delete the account altogether. If this happened more than 30 days ago, your only option is to create a new account.

No matter what process you used to resolve your hacked Facebook/Meta account issue, ensure you create a super-strong password now and in the future. Also, consider changing the associated email and adding 2-factor authentication to make future hacks even less likely to happen.

The good news: You have more control than you might think when it comes to preventing your account from falling into the wrong hands, says Cleary. Take these steps to limit the chance that your account will be hacked.

However, having your Facebook account hacked is actually not that uncommon. There are many reasons why someone might want to gain access to your Facebook account. While stealing your personal information like your passwords and other credentials is one major motivation, forcing your Facebook account to share spam with your friends online is another.

You'll have to reset your password by clicking the Forgot Your Password link underneath the Facebook login. You will need to provide information to identify yourself, such as the email address you used to register with Facebook, the phone number associated with your account, your Facebook username, or your name and the name of one of your Facebook friends.

If ads or spam are being sent from your hacked account, you must report it as compromised, which you can do at this link (opens in new tab). After reporting, you will receive further instructions from Facebook to resolve the issue.

Even if you have not been hacked, shoring up your Facebook security is a good idea. Since many Facebook account compromises are caused by external apps, consider limiting the number of apps you use in general, both on your computer and your smartphone.

Blair is locked out of her Facebook account and her email and suspects someone is using the accounts to send messages impersonating her. Frustrated and furious, Blair hires a Social Media Law attorney to discuss her options and further investigate the hacking. Luckily, her lawyer was able to find proof that someone was in fact using her email account to send phony messages.

Initially, the case was tossed in a lower court because Blair waited too long to file charges. However, later, a three-judge appeals court found that even though the statutes of limitations had expired for the email hacking, Blair could still move forward with Facebook claims.

Chris Loizos was locked out of his account after a hacker got in. Because the hacker changed the email address tied to his profile, Loizos has no way to reset the password and get back in. And try as he might, he cannot connect with an actual human being at Facebook to help him get back in.

If the email you use with your Facebook gets hacked, you may lose control of your Facebook account too. Your email login information is valuable and you should look after it. Follow the same guidelines as for your Facebook password: pick a strong password, don't leave your email account logged in where someone else could access it and don't give away your password.

Malware -- malicious software -- is another tool that a hacker can use to take over your Facebook account. Keyloggers are programs that record everything you type into your computer. The person controlling the keylogger then has access to your login information. Other forms of spyware can steal information from your computer that may give someone else access to your Facebook account.

Instead of high-tech attacks, social engineering relies on confidence tricks to steal your data. In the case of Facebook, this is generally done by "phishing." You receive an email that looks as if it came from Facebook. It seems real but this email comes from a scammer. It will often have an urgent tone, for example telling you that your account will be shut down if you don't respond with your password or log in via a link in the email. If you do either of these, your login information will be stolen. Avoid phishing mails by setting your spam filter to block junk mail. Always log into Facebook via your bookmarks or by typing Facebook.com into your browser -- that way you know you are on the real Facebook site, not a counterfeit operated by phishers.

Consider what kind of information the hacker might have seen. Hackers look for information that can help them find usernames and passwords to important sites, like online banking or retirement accounts. Consider changing the usernames and passwords for accounts that may be at risk.

In your email account, review the Sent, Trash, or Deleted folders. You might be able to uncover clues about what the hacker did. Search for emails that the hacker sent from your account, or that the hacker may have viewed and then deleted.

If you the hacker misused your sensitive information, like your Social Security number, to access or open new accounts, to apply for government benefits, to file federal taxes, or any other misuse, report it. At IdentityTheft.gov, you can create an individualized recovery plan to help you recover from identity theft.

I did some significant research in preparation for this blog post on the two Pages that attempted to run ads from my account, and I discovered a vast number of hacked Facebook Pages with scam posts, many of which are/were running scam ads as well. All Pages have a variation on the names.

My good friend, live video expert Molly Mahoney experienced a very similar Business Manager hacking last month where the scammers were somehow able to add themselves to her account. Then, they quickly racked up a whopping $20,000 USD in scam ads before she knew it.

Of course, it goes without saying that if you have a Facebook Account Rep/contact that can help you with any issues regarding a hacked account, then for sure reach out to them immediately. Nonetheless, you may also need to follow several of the steps detailed here anyway if your person is unable to resolve the issue for you.

Also, ask a few friends if they could please check your profile on Facebook and see if your name or profile picture has been changed. And if the hacker has made any posts on your wall. Ask these friends to report your profile as a hacked account.

My account been taken and the person has controlled it for over two years. Everytime I try to regain it or get a new facebook account he reports it as a fake account. I Can prove who I am Why cant you just help me.

When asked to re-enter your birth date, they only have a drop down for the year which goes back to 1956. Needless to say this is a problem for anyone born in 1955 or earlier. It seems to me that this is an effort by Facebook to hold onto a lot of accounts where people are deceased or simply are old and have forgotten their password. I suggest there are probably millions of old accounts out there that just help facebook gather more money from advertizers but which no longer represent anyone.
