Abstract:The expansion of electric vehicles made the expansion of charging infrastructure rudimentary to keep up with this developing technology that helps people in a myriad of ways. The main drawback in electric vehicle charging, however, is the time consumed to charge a vehicle. The fast charging of electric vehicles solves this problem thus making it a lucrative technology for consumers. However, the fast charging technology is not without its limitations. In this paper we have identified the technology gaps in EV fast charging stations mostly focused on the extremely fast charging topology. It will help pave a path for researchers to direct their effort in a consolidated manner to contribute to the fast charging infrastructure. A thorough review of all aspects and limitations of existing extremely fast charging (XFC) stations have been identified and supporting data are provided. The importance of DC power network based on free fuel energy sources and silicon carbide-based power electronics are proposed to provide ultra-low cost and ultra-high speed XFC stations. Keywords: electric vehicles; extremely fast chargers; power electronics
Also the there might be limitations of the grid connection or multiple chargers on a single location could share power which may result in a situation that a fast charger cannot provide full power. For example at a Tesla supercharger two stalls typically share their capacity. So if one car charges at full power, there is limited power left for the other car. At Fastned all chargers can typically work at full power regardless of the number of vehicles charging at the same location.

Fast charging stations will be key to charging large numbers of electric vehicles.Charging an electric car will be a mix of home charging, destination charging (at work, a supermarket, hotels, etc.), public slow charging and public fast charging.
The limitation varies from country to country, but is typically less than 7kW for a 32A socket (in EU, 220 x 32A = 7kW). On the other hand, three-phase power supplies convert the power from AC to DC externally, and can transfer over 120kW to the battery, enabling super-fast charging. 2ff7e9595c
